The important message surrounding International Women’s Day 2024 is “Invest in women- accelerate progress”. Each year, on the 8th of March, the world marks International Women’s Day to renew our collective commitment to achieving gender equality.
The latest survey conducted by the Solicitors Regulation Authority shows a slow but steady increase in diversity among all lawyers, but despite over 60% of solicitors being women, women are still sorely under-represented at the higher echelons of the profession, with only around a third of women holding the role of full equity partner, a figure which has not moved much in over five years. The data shows the numbers of women steadily dropping off with each rung of the corporate ladder.
“A strong woman looks a challenge in the eye and gives it a wink” – Gina Carey
The issue of gender equality is multifaceted and there is no one solution, but increasing awareness of the issue is the first step. This is why IWD is so important for bringing these matters to the forefront of people’s minds as a reminder to continue with the progress.
Parslows (now Parslows LLP) recognise that diverse teams solve problems better. Over the last five years Parslows LLP has made three significant hirings/promotions of females within the firm. In 2021, Melanie Guest, an experienced senior conveyancer, was promoted to Head of Residential Property. In March 2023, the firm strengthened its family law offering with the recruitment of Barbara Littler as Head of the firm’s Family Department and in September 2023, Parslows LLP promoted Advocate Natalie Jenner as the firm’s first female Managing Partner. Now, the firm’s female employees make up over half of our workforce, and this is mirrored at the most senior level in our firm.
Parslows LLP recognise that our people are our greatest strength and we are proud to have an inclusive firm.
